Registering for the civic exam

In short
You register directly with a centre of one of the two bodies accredited by the ministère de l'Intérieur (Ministry of the Interior): CCI Paris Île-de-France or France Éducation International. The price is set by each centre. Source: formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr

You cannot register for the civic exam (examen civique) on the Ministry of the Interior's formation-civique website, and Cal Civique does not register you either. This page brings together the registration links of the two bodies, what to prepare and what to know about the price and the timing.

The two bodies

Two bodies have been accredited by the Ministry of the Interior to run the civic exam:

  • CCI Paris Île-de-France, under the name Le français des affaires.
  • France Éducation International.

You take the exam in a centre of one of these two bodies, on a tablet or computer. The exam has 40 questions and lasts 45 minutes at most. The format is explained in detail on the page how the exam works.

Where to register

You register with a centre of one of the two bodies, not on the formation-civique website. The links below are the ones given by the Ministry of the Interior:

Before you book, check which level (mention) you need. The exam exists at three levels: multi-year residence permit (carte de séjour pluriannuelle), resident card (carte de résident) and naturalisation. A pass at the resident card level is also valid for a multi-year residence permit application. To find out whether you are concerned and for which application, read who must take the civic exam.

Are you applying for naturalisation and living abroad? Service-public.gouv.fr says to contact an Institut français, an Alliance française or the consular authorities in your country of residence to find out the steps.

The information to prepare

Your AGDREF number. To register with CCI Paris Île-de-France, you are asked for your AGDREF number, also called foreign national number (numéro étranger). Keep it at hand before you start registering online.

Your documents for exam day. You show your notice to attend (convocation) and a valid identity document: your residence permit (titre de séjour). A passport or identity card is accepted only for a European Union national taking the naturalisation level. A photo of you is taken before the exam.

The price

The price of the exam is set by each exam centre and can vary from one centre to another. So there is no single fee: ask the centre you choose for the price before you book.

For a naturalisation application, the procedure costs a tax stamp (timbre fiscal) of €255 (€127.50 in French Guiana). The price of the civic exam is separate, set by the centre.

Times and timing

The times. Sessions take place between 8 am and 8 pm. There are none on Sundays or public holidays.

The result. The certificate (attestation) is issued 12 to 48 hours after the exam. At CCI Paris Île-de-France, the result arrives within 24 to 48 working hours, in a digital safe where it is kept for 10 years. You then attach the certificate to your permit application in the ANEF. The certificate of success (attestation de réussite) has no expiry date.

If you fail. You can retake the exam as many times as needed. CCI Paris Île-de-France requires at least one day between two attempts. It accepts an appeal within 30 days of the date the certificate was issued, only in case of a serious anomaly or malfunction during the exam, to be reported to the supervisor on the same day.

Beware of paid intermediaries

You register directly with a centre of CCI Paris Île-de-France or France Éducation International, at the price set by that centre. If a website offers to register you on your behalf, check that it really is a centre of one of these two bodies.

Cal Civique is a practice app. It does not register you for the exam and does not sell registrations. The Ministry of the Interior also states that you can prepare for free: its study sheets and lists of knowledge questions are freely available on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr.
