A practice test in the exam format

The civic exam (examen civique) has 40 multiple-choice questions in French: 28 knowledge questions and 12 scenario questions (mises en situation), with only one correct answer out of four. You have 45 minutes at most, and you need 32 correct answers to pass. Our practice test follows this format, with a timer and the same split across the five themes. It usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

No time today? The express test

The express test has 10 questions taken from the same practice test: two per theme, including two scenario questions, with a 12-minute timer. It gives you an overview of your weak points by theme, with each mistake explained and its source. It is not the exam format: to measure yourself against the pass mark of 32 out of 40, take the full practice test. You can also stop the full test whenever you want: you then see a partial result based on your answers, with your mistakes explained.

Format described by the ministère de l'Intérieur on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr and by service-public.gouv.fr (in French).

What you get at the end

  • Your score out of 40, with the pass mark of 32 correct answers.
  • Your result theme by theme, and separately for the scenario questions.
  • Each of your mistakes explained (in French, with an English version), starting with your weakest theme, with its public source.
  • All of this for free, with no account and no email.

How to practise next

First go back to the theme where you made the most mistakes. Read the explanation and the source of each mistake, then do more questions on that theme before taking another full practice test. For examples by theme, go to the sample questions with answers (in French), and for the format in detail, to how the exam works.

Frequently asked questions

How many correct answers do you need to pass the civic exam?

You need 32 correct answers out of 40, which is 80%. A wrong or blank answer scores 0 points. Source: service-public.gouv.fr, fiche F39530 (in French)

Are the questions the ones on exam day?

No. They are practice questions written by Cal Civique from the published syllabus. For the multi-year residence permit (carte de séjour pluriannuelle) and resident card (carte de résident) levels, the ministry states that the exam's scenario questions (mises en situation) are not made public.

Is the practice test at the level of my permit?

This practice test is at resident card level. The themes and the format are the same for the three levels (mentions): multi-year residence permit, resident card, naturalisation. But each level has its own list of knowledge questions.

Where can I find other free tests?

The ministère de l'Intérieur (the French Ministry of the Interior) publishes fact sheets and lists of knowledge questions, without the answers, on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr (in French). The Cal Civique app, coming soon to Android and iPhone, will offer more practice tests and a course by theme.
